19-year-old Naomi Osaka was victorious against Venus Williams, as she was able to knock Williams out in the Hong Kong Open’s second round. Williams was seeded second, and was competing in her second tennis match after the US Open, but she lost 7-5 6-2 to the Japanese, who occupies the 64th position in world rankings.
Fellow second seed Petra Kvitova, suffered a loss in her Tianjin Open first-round match, much to everyone’s surprise. The Czech suffered 6-4 5-7 6-4 defeat at the hands of 113th placed Chinese Zhu Lin. In the match, she shelled out eight double faults. That brings Kvitova’s loss tally to five, out of seven three-set matches she has played in 2017. A somewhat disappointing record, many would agree.
Sharapova Finding Way Back
Also in Tianjin, Maria Sharapova of Russia recorded a straight-set win after playing against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu, and the win shot her to the second round.
Sharapova used to be the ranked number 1 in the world, but she now sits at number 86. She only had to play for 82 minutes before flooring Begu 6-4 6-2.
Sharapova made good use of all her four break points to secure her place in a clash with Polish Magda Linette.
Rain had previously disrupted the inaugural days of the tournament, and Sharapova stated that it had been a long and uneasy wait for everyone involved. She also mentioned that she had first trained outdoors, but the rain ruined all that and it felt like it was never going to end. She commended the tournament for it’s state-of-the-art indoor training facilities.
