Since the inception of the Ballon d’Or and its alliance with FIFA in 2010 through 2015, Lionel Messi has won the prestigious awards for a record five times, while Christiano Ronaldo has picked up the award for four times, one shy of leading man Lionel Messi.
The rivalry between the two megastars appears unending as both players gear up for another round of fierce competition for the prestigious men’s award. Christiano Ronaldo has been tipped by the bookmakers to clinch the fifth award this year.
In the shortlist for the 2017 Ballon d’Or, Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool was the first man to be named on the list, Coutinho has been phenomenal for both club and country this year.
Next on this list is Paulo Dybala of Juventus and Argentina who has scored 12 goals so far this season for Juventus.
Chelsea Football Club’s midfield maestro N’Golo Kante comes in at third. Kante was instrumental to the success of the clubs he played for in the last two season.

Leicester coming in from the Championship and securing the Premier League title was a tale that couldn’t be told, and Kante was a key player in Leicester City’s title surge. His professionalism won him the Player of the Season Award last season and is on course for another award if he eventually nicks the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
Other players who made the short list are Real Madrid’s Marcelo, Napoli’s Dries Mertens, Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, PSG’s Neymar, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Barcelona’s forward ‘Luis Suarez’, all in descending order.
This year, the Ballon d’Or will be overseen by a panel of Judges after FIFA, and France Football parted ways in 2015.
Last month, the trio of Neymar, Ronaldo, and Messi were nominated for the prestigious FIFA Men’s Player Award.
