After a knockout defeat at the hands of Juventus, Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique believes that the veteran shot-stopper of the Old Lady, Buffon’s amazing decade in the game makes him one the best candidate for the most decorated club award in world football.
The amazing shot stopper who plays for both Juventus and Italy at the age of 39 will want to lift the 2016-17 champions league from title holder Real Madrid at Cardiff come June 3, which is a trophy he has never won.
Pique said; “Buffon is an icon in the game and I think everyone who loves the game would want him to win the Ballon d’Or this year. But the decision is not in my hands so we will just see how it goes”.
The Italian for decades has numerous individual, clubs and national medals for himself which include 5 Super Coppa Italiana crowns, three Coppa Italia trophies, eight Serie A Crowns and a world cup medal.
Although the Catalan Centre back feels his Catalan team-mate should be given a record sixth Ballon d’Or, but still wants the prestigious award handed over to veteran goal keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Gerrard Pique believes Buffon has been extremely impressive in over 2 decades in the game and it will be a breath of fresh air if a goalkeeper wins the Balloon d’Or even ahead of Lionel Messi, who is already certain to win the European Golden Shoe.
Clash Of Two Giants
Juventus will meet Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Champions League in Cardiff and the game will have a huge bearing on who wins the Ballon for this year as Cristiano Ronaldo is the clear favourite to pick up the award this year. But all that could change if they don’t win the Champions League.
